Abstract

In evaluating the seismic capacity of a reinforced concrete building based on standards issued by the Building Research Institute, Japan, the effect of a masonry wall with openings is neglected assuming the wall does not make a significant contribution to the supporting frame structure. However, a number of researchers have stated that masonry walls with openings have an influence on the lateral strength of the frame structure, but the effect depends on the ratio of the opening area to the wall area. This difference of opinion illustrates that the contribution of masonry with openings to the lateral resistance of the frame structure is not clearly known. Therefore, further research is strongly needed regarding the effect of masonry walls with variations in the width of the openings on the lateral resistance of the frame structure. Two models of experimental were adopted in this analysis. Furthermore, masonry walls with 25 % and 40 % were tested with diagonal strut model. The maximum lateral strength of structures with walls having 25% opening is 42.84 kN with deviation is 16.76%  and maximum lateral strength of structure with walls having  40% opening is 39.04 kN with deviation 4.32%. The results show that the proposed model in the analysis of the masonry walls with openings on the lateral resistance of the frame structure shows a good agreement. It can be concluded that the developed model can be used.
